Testing him

I was going to try to wait to talk with B about the semen analysis until next cycle. “Try” being the key word. Instead I opted to hand him the sheet the doctor gave me describing the analysis in detail during the commercial break of a football game. I admit, poor planning on my part. Bless his heart, my poor husband’s face was hysterical as he read through everything. He looked up at me with horror in his eyes and said “so they want me to jerk off at the doctors office?!” Crude, but hysterical.

I am not sure what exactly he thought his testing would consist of, but apparently the true meaning never crossed his mind. Since I should ovulate this weekend, he either needs to get tested early this week or sometime next week. I tried to explain this to him, but he still couldn’t get over what they were actually asking him to do!

FYI – for those of you that asked about combining the semen analysis and IUI: it turns out that my RE wants me to have at least one medicated cycle with B here before trying an IUI. Even though we have had 6 medicated cycles, this will be the first with the RE. Thanks for the suggestion though! It was something I hadn’t even considered.

I pray that his test results come back okay. I don’t know how he will react if he finds out that something is wrong with him.

guys don't really seem to get what it all entails.

Hope it goes well!

Guys are such babies!!!! My DH was the same way. However, they gave us a "party cup" and we were able to do his part at home and then rush it to the RE's office. (It just had to be there within 1 hour of "production".) Having me "help" really makes things less uncomfortable for him.

Well at least he had the football game to lessen the blow, right? I would have done the same thing. :) Hopefully he'll be less freaked out about it by the time the "donation" rolls around.

Did you ever see the movie "A Smile Like Yours"? It is a move about infertility, where in order to get her hesitant hubby to do a test, the wife performs, well, YOU know and then puts the specimen in a little jar in the fridge, inside the margarine. At the time, I laughed. Now, I think that A) It wouldn't work and B)If it did, I would have tried it with MY hesitant hubby.

I hope that your husband warms up to the idea, and that you get good results from his analysis.

Thank you for the comment!

I think my husband still thinks some parts of IF treatment have a "magical" aspect to them. While I am hyper involved in every detail he's a little bit more broad about the whole thing.

For instance, after we were told we'd need a second IUI this cycle he asked if they would have leftover sperm from the first one, the day before. Would he reallllllly need to go back? Ha! They're just blissfully unaware.

My husband put this one off forever before finally doing it. It took me finishing all of my tests before he'd even consider it. But...once he knew he HAD to...he got it done as needed. I think in the end it helped him feel more a part of the process.

Good luck with getting your man to do the deed! Oh the joys of IF!

I guess maybe I prepared him for the whole "testing" him part, but our first few SA's and IUIs were done at home. After that, when I moved onto injectables, we started getting the sample at the clinic. I'd read on pubmed that studies had higher rates of pregnancy in association with how soon the sample was washed and how old it was, with less time producing more pregnancies. His SA's got much better numbers when we did them at the clinic, too (though not horrible at home).

Good luck!!! I'd hope you don't have to go the IUI route and you're a gal who gets pregnant her 1st month on drugs!!! :)

So glad your husband is home!
